Taxis are readily available in the larger towns and are generally of a good standard. it is always worth checking what the fare will be before setting off. As a guide, a 3 to 4 kilometre journey would be approximately 4 euros. The most inexpensive way of getting around are the ‘aluguers’ that are easily identified and drive around town picking up passengers. Often overloaded with people and packages, you simply shout when you want to get off. Watch the time as generally ‘aluguers’ do not operate after about 4.30pm. Most hotels offer a car hire facility. Internationally accepted companies as Hertz and avis are operating in Cape Verde.



Tourism is getting more and more. Health and safety and service levels in hotels and restaurants are getting up to international standards. As with all developing countries there is poverty and you may encounter a persistent local trying to sell you paintings, jewellery and handicrafts. A simple no is often enough to stop them trying. First time travellers are often not prepared for the difference in the pace of life but soon adjust to the tropical life and fall for the charm of the islands

Currency

The currency in Cape Verde is Escudo, expressed as $ or CVE after the figure and can only be obtained in the islands. Euros are generally accepted and we recommend that you take Euro travellers cheques. There is a fixed exchange rate of 110$ to 1 euro which means there is approximately 163$ to the pound. Credit cards in general are still not widely accepted however Visa credit cards are accepted on some islands but should not be relied on. If they are, surcharges of approximately 6% of the price are applied so we suggest cash as the best method of payment. Excursions can be paid for by Visa or cash.
